Key takeaways
  • On most domestic (intra-state) sales the GST is split equally: half CGST to the central government, half SGST to the state; inter-state sales use a single IGST instead.
  • Since 22 September 2025 (the GST 2.0 rate rationalisation), India has two main rates — 5% (merit) and 18% (standard) — plus a 40% special rate for de-merit goods and 0% for exempt supplies; 18% covers most everyday goods and services.
  • GST is charged on the transaction value — the price actually paid after discounts, not the MRP.

Add or remove Goods and Services Tax from any price in seconds. Built for Indian shoppers and sellers — GST is India’s national indirect tax, charged at the current GST rates of 0%, 5%, 18% or 40% and split equally into CGST + SGST on most domestic sales.

How It Works — 3 Steps

  1. 1Pick a modeChoose “Add GST” when your price is tax-exclusive, or “Remove GST” when the price already includes tax.
  2. 2Enter amount & rateType the price and pick the GST rate — 0%, 5%, 18% or 40% (or enter a custom rate), and choose intra-state (CGST + SGST) or inter-state (IGST).
  3. 3See the splitGet the GST amount, net price, gross total, and the CGST + SGST breakup (or the single IGST) instantly.

The GST Formula

Add GST (exclusive): GST = Amount × Rate  •  Total = Amount + GST
Remove GST (inclusive): Net = Total ÷ (1 + Rate)  •  GST = Total − Net
Worked example: A gadget costs $1,000 before tax with 18% GST. GST = 1,000 × 0.18 = $180.00, so the customer pays $1,180.00. Reversing it: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = $1,000.00 net — the same numbers, both directions.

Deep Dive

India’s GST is split between governments. On most intra-state (within one state) sales, the tax is divided equally:

  • CGST — Central GST, goes to the Government of India (half the slab rate)
  • SGST — State GST, goes to the state government (the other half)

On inter-state sales, a single IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full slab rate instead, and the centre settles it with the destination state. Use the Intra-state / Inter-state switch in the calculator above: intra-state shows the CGST + SGST split that most retail bills display, while inter-state shows the single IGST amount instead.

Since 22 September 2025 — the GST 2.0 rate rationalisation decided at the 56th GST Council meeting on 3 September 2025 — India has two main rates plus a de-merit rate. Broadly:

  • 0% — exempt supplies: fresh food, milk, bread, books, healthcare and education services, and individual life and health insurance
  • 5% (merit rate) — essentials such as sugar, tea, edible oils, processed foods, medicines, bicycles, economy hotel rooms and restaurant dining
  • 18% (standard rate) — the most common rate: soaps, electronics, mobiles, most services, small cars and cement
  • 40% (de-merit rate) — luxury and sin goods: luxury cars and SUVs, aerated drinks, tobacco products (beedis moved to 18% on 1 February 2026) and motorcycles above 350cc — this rate absorbs the old compensation cess

Before the reform, GST ran on five slabs — 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% — plus a compensation cess on de-merit goods; the 12% and 28% slabs were removed and the cess merged into the 40% rate. Tobacco and pan masala were the one transitional exception — they kept 28% plus compensation cess until the compensation loans were repaid — and from 1 February 2026 the cess was set to nil for them too (Notification No. 03/2025-Compensation Cess (Rate)), with tobacco products moved to the 40% rate and beedis to 18%. Separate central excise duties on tobacco, and a capacity-based health and national security cess on pan masala, now apply outside GST — so there is no GST compensation cess on any goods today, which is why this calculator has no cess field (cess position checked October 2026). Rates are set by the GST Council, so always confirm the current rate for your product before quoting a final price.

  • Adding 18% to an inclusive price: if the tag already says “inclusive of all taxes”, multiplying by 1.18 double-counts the tax — use Remove mode instead.
  • Rounding too early: CGST and SGST are each rounded to the nearest paisa on real invoices; rounding the halves before adding can drift by a paisa.
  • Forgetting that GST is on the discounted price: tax applies after discounts and coupons, not on the MRP.

GST Invoice Builder — Multiple Items

Billing several items at different rates? Add a line for each item below. Amounts are the prices before GST. Pick a preset rate per line, or type a custom rate for that line (it overrides the preset). Each line’s GST is rounded to the nearest cent and the totals are the sums of the rounded lines, so the invoice always adds up exactly. The tax split follows the supply type: intra-state divides the tax into CGST + SGST halves (rounded so the halves always sum to the GST total); inter-state charges it as a single IGST.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the price by the GST rate and add it on. At 18%, a $1,000 item gets $180 of GST for a $1,180 total. Select “Add GST (exclusive)” mode and this calculator does it for you.

How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?

Divide the total by (1 + rate). A $1,180 bill at 18% GST gives 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = $1,000 net, so the GST component is $180. Use “Remove GST (inclusive)” mode here.

What is the CGST and SGST split?

On intra-state sales, GST is split equally: at 18%, 9% is CGST (central government) and 9% is SGST (state government). So $180 of GST means $90 CGST + $90 SGST — exactly what the calculator shows.

What are the GST rates in India?

Since 22 September 2025, India has two main GST rates — 5% (merit) and 18% (standard) — plus a 40% special rate for de-merit goods such as luxury cars and tobacco, and 0% for exempt supplies. Most everyday goods and services fall under 18%, and essentials under 5% or 0%. Before that date there were five slabs (0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%). Rates are set by the GST Council and can change.

Is GST charged on the MRP or the discounted price?

GST is charged on the transaction value — the price actually paid after discounts. If a $1,000 item sells at a 10% discount ($900), GST applies on $900, giving $1,062 total at 18%.

What is the difference between inclusive and exclusive GST pricing?

Exclusive pricing quotes the net price and adds tax at checkout ($1,000 + $180 = $1,180). Inclusive pricing shows the final price with tax already inside it ($1,180, of which $180 is GST). Shops must tell customers which one they use.

GST slabs and rules are set by India’s GST Council and change over time — the rates shown here reflect the structure in force from 22 September 2025, and the GST compensation cess ended on all goods on 1 February 2026 — confirm the current rate for your product or service with a qualified tax professional before relying on these figures for invoices or filings.
