Your number badges

Two playful badges that update with your inputs — Life Path from your birthdate, Destiny from your name.

Life Path — from your birthdate Destiny — from your name
Key takeaways
  • Life Path is digit reduction of your birthdate: 1+9+9+0+0+6+1+5 = 31 → 4 at the defaults — add the digits, then keep adding until a single digit remains.
  • Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are the exception: numerology tradition keeps them unreduced, so a total landing on one of them stays as it is.
  • Destiny comes from your name on the Pythagorean letter chart (A=1 to I=9, then repeating), reduced the same way. A playful personality game: strictly for fun, never predictions.

The math behind your numbers

Numerology math is simple digit reduction: add digits together, and if the result has more than one digit, add those digits too, until one digit remains. The only exception is the master numbers 11, 22, and 33, which numerology tradition keeps unreduced.

Life Path = reduce(Y+Y+Y+Y + M+M + D+D) · Destiny = reduce(Σ letter values)

Pythagorean letter chart: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, then it repeats — J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8. Spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes are skipped.

Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday and the cycles

More numbers from the same two inputs — each one is the tradition’s own arithmetic, with its definition stated the way the tradition states it.

Soul Urge and Personality. Numerology books split the name in two. The Soul Urge number (also called the Heart’s Desire) adds up only the vowels in the full name; the Personality number adds up only the consonants. Both totals are reduced exactly like the Destiny number, master numbers kept. The letter Y counts as a vowel in a name part that has no A, E, I, O or U of its own (as in Lynn or Rhythm); in a part that does have one of those vowels, Y counts as a consonant (as in Mary).

Birthday. The Birthday number is the day of the month you were born, reduced on its own: the 15th gives 1+5 = 6, the 29th gives 2+9 = 11, kept as a master number.

Maturity. The Maturity number (also called the Realization number) simply adds the two headline numbers together — Life Path + Destiny — and reduces the total the same way.

Karmic lessons and debt — the tradition’s labels, reported as arithmetic. Karmic lessons are the digits 1–9 that never appear among your name’s letter values. Karmic debt numbers are the totals 13, 14, 16 and 19 when one of them shows up on the way to a final number: tradition attaches a “debt” label to 13 reducing to 4, 14 to 5, 16 to 7 and 19 to 1. This page reports both as plain arithmetic facts with the tradition’s labels attached — it makes no claim that they describe you.

Personal Year, Month and Day. The personal cycles run the same reduction over a calendar date. The Personal Year adds the digits of your birth month and birth day to the digits of the chosen year. The Personal Month adds the calendar month number to the Personal Year. The Personal Day adds the day number to the Personal Month. Every total is reduced the same way, master numbers kept, and the Advanced options panel lets you run the cycles for any date instead of today.

The Chaldean letter chart

The optional second system uses the Chaldean chart, as published by Cheiro in The Book of Numbers — an older table in which no letter carries the value 9, a number the Chaldean tradition treats as sacred. Switching charts changes the name numbers only; every date number stays exactly the same. Because 9 is never assigned, Chaldean karmic lessons are read against digits 1–8.

Go deeper

The details that make the numbers feel personal — and where they stop.

In numerology tradition, 11, 22, and 33 are called master numbers and are not reduced to 2, 4, and 6. Playfully, they are read as “amplified” versions of their reduced digit:

  • 11 — an intensified 2: intuition, inspiration, and nervous energy turned up.
  • 22 — an intensified 4: big practical visions, the “master builder” story.
  • 33 — an intensified 6: big-hearted nurturing, the “master healer” story.

This calculator keeps them exactly as tradition does — and still just for fun.

Numerology fans give the two numbers different storytelling jobs:

  • Life Path (from your birthdate): the “theme” of the story — the natural tendencies you supposedly bring everywhere.
  • Destiny / Expression (from your name): the “role” in the story — how you supposedly express yourself and what you are drawn toward.

Since both are pure arithmetic on public inputs, two people sharing a birthday get the same Life Path — one more reason to treat it as a game, not a diagnosis.

Life Path meanings in tradition, and the two charts

Everything in this section is what numerology tradition says about its own numbers, reported as tradition, for fun. None of it is a finding about any real person, and none of it predicts anything.

Life Path numbers 1 to 9, and the master numbers

The Life Path is the headline number of this calculator: the birthdate reduced to one digit, except for 11, 22, and 33, which tradition keeps unreduced as master numbers. The table below gives the short traditional sketch for each number, in the same spirit as the number badges the calculator already shows. Read them as folklore labels, the way a horoscope column is read, not as descriptions that have been tested against anyone.

Life PathTraditional sketch, in tradition’s own terms
1Independence and leadership: the self-starter, happiest starting things.
2Cooperation and sensitivity: the peacemaker, happiest keeping things together.
3Expression and sociability: the communicator, happiest making and sharing things.
4Order and hard work: the builder, happiest with systems that last.
5Freedom and change: the adventurer, happiest with variety and movement.
6Responsibility and care: the nurturer, happiest looking after people and homes.
7Analysis and reflection: the seeker, happiest thinking things through alone.
8Ambition and organisation: the achiever, happiest building material results.
9Compassion and completion: the humanitarian, happiest serving a wider cause.
11Master number: intuition and inspiration, a 2 carried at a higher charge, in tradition’s terms.
22Master number: the master builder, a 4 carried at a larger scale, in tradition’s terms.
33Master number: the master teacher, a 6 carried at its widest, in tradition’s terms, and the rarest of the three.

Two cautions belong with that table. First, the master numbers are rare by arithmetic: 11 appears whenever a birthdate’s digits sum to 11 or 29, 22 needs a sum of 22, and 33 needs a sum of 33, which only a few birthdates in any century can reach. Second, tradition itself disagrees about whether master numbers should stay unreduced in every position: this calculator keeps them for Life Path, Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday, and Maturity alike, and reduces everything else the same way every time, so the same inputs always give the same numbers.

Pythagorean or Chaldean: why one name can give two Destiny numbers

The calculator offers two name charts, and they disagree about letter values on purpose. The Pythagorean chart, the default, runs 1 to 9 and repeats: A is 1 through I is 9, then J is 1 again through R is 9, then S is 1 through Z is 8. The Chaldean chart, as published by Cheiro in The Book of Numbers, runs 1 to 8 only and never assigns 9, which Chaldean tradition treats as sacred: A, I, J, Q, and Y are 1; B, K, and R are 2; C, G, L, and S are 3; D, M, and T are 4; E, H, N, and X are 5; U, V, and W are 6; O and Z are 7; and F and P are 8. Because the charts differ, the same name can reduce to a different Destiny, Soul Urge, or Personality number, while every date number, Life Path, Birthday, and personal cycle, stays exactly the same on both charts.

Worked through on the name John: on the Pythagorean chart J is 1, O is 6, H is 8, and N is 5, which sums to 20 and reduces to a Destiny of 2. On the Chaldean chart J is 1, O is 7, H is 5, and N is 5, which sums to 18 and reduces to a Destiny of 9. Neither answer is more correct than the other: they are two different traditional tables applied to the same letters, and the calculator lets you switch between them in Advanced options to see both. The same switch changes the karmic lessons, which are read against digits 1 to 9 on the Pythagorean chart and 1 to 8 on the Chaldean chart, because 9 is never assigned there. If a name contains accented letters or characters outside A to Z, both charts skip them, exactly as the FAQ section explains.

Personal Year cycles: the time dimension

Core numbers are fixed, so numerology adds cycles for timing. The Personal Year number is calculated from the birth month and day plus the current calendar year, reduced to a single digit, and it is said to describe the theme of that year: a 1 year for beginnings, a 5 year for change, a 9 year for completion, and so on. A reading that addresses timing without cycles is missing the part of the system designed for timing, and a reading that treats a Personal Year as a prediction rather than a theme is overstating what the system claims.

Cycles are also where numerology is most testable and most often vague: a theme broad enough to fit any year cannot be wrong, which is also why it cannot be evidence. Enjoy cycles as a reflective prompt for the year ahead, not as a forecast to plan around.

Compatibility numbers: what they can and cannot say

Compatibility readings compare two charts, usually Life Path numbers, and describe harmony or tension between them. A Life Path 2 and a Life Path 6 are traditionally read as harmonious, both oriented to cooperation and care, while a 1 and a 5 are read as independent and changeable in ways that can clash or complement. The honest limit is that any two people share some numbers and differ on others, so a compatibility reading can always find both harmony and tension, and the selection between them is the reader choice, not the numbers.

Use compatibility numbers, if at all, as conversation prompts about real differences in temperament and habits, which are observable, rather than as verdicts on a relationship, which they are not.

Name changes and the chart that changes with them

Because Destiny and Soul Urge numbers come from the name, a name change, through marriage, adoption, or personal choice, changes those numbers while leaving the Life Path unchanged. Traditional practice is divided: some readers use the birth name only, arguing it is fixed; others use the current name, arguing it reflects the lived identity. The calculator on this site uses the name you enter, so entering a birth name and a current name gives two charts, and the difference between them is itself a useful illustration of how much of numerology depends on which input you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about this numerology calculator.

How is my Life Path number calculated?

Every digit of your birthdate is added together, then the total is reduced digit-by-digit until one digit remains — unless the total is 11, 22, or 33, which are kept as master numbers. For 1990-06-15: 1+9+9+0+0+6+1+5 = 31, then 3+1 = 4, so the Life Path is 4.

What are master numbers 11, 22, and 33?

Master numbers are two-digit totals (11, 22, 33) that numerology tradition refuses to reduce further. Playfully they are read as amplified versions of 2, 4, and 6. This calculator keeps them unreduced, exactly as tradition does.

How is the Destiny (Expression) number calculated from a name?

Each letter gets a value from the Pythagorean chart (A=1 through I=9, then repeating J=1 through Z=8), the values are summed, and the total is reduced the same way as the Life Path — master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are kept. Non-letters like spaces and hyphens are skipped. If you switch the name chart to Chaldean under Advanced options, the name numbers use the Chaldean table instead — the birthdate numbers never change.

Is numerology scientific?

No. There is no scientific evidence that numbers derived from a birthdate or name describe personality or predict events. This calculator is a personality game for entertainment — enjoy the story, but make real decisions on real evidence.

Can my numbers change over time?

Your Life Path never changes — your birthdate is fixed. Your Destiny number can change if you change the name you use (a married name, a pen name, a nickname), since it is computed from the letters you enter. Try a nickname above and watch it update.

What if my name has accents or characters outside A–Z?

The calculator uses the English A–Z values only, so accented letters (é, ñ, ü) and non-Latin characters are skipped in the sum. For the most traditional result, enter the unaccented English spelling of your name.

What do Life Path numbers 1 to 9 mean in numerology tradition?

In tradition, 1 stands for independence and leadership, 2 for cooperation, 3 for expression, 4 for order and hard work, 5 for freedom and change, 6 for responsibility and care, 7 for analysis, 8 for ambition, and 9 for compassion, with master numbers 11, 22, and 33 kept unreduced as intensified versions of 2, 4, and 6. These are folklore labels reported as tradition, for fun, not findings about any real person, and numerology has no scientific evidence behind it. Your own Life Path is the birthdate reduced digit by digit, as the calculator shows.

Why does my Destiny number change when I switch to the Chaldean chart?

Because the two charts assign different values to the same letters. The Pythagorean chart runs 1 to 9 and repeats, while the Chaldean chart runs 1 to 8 only and never assigns 9, so the name John sums to 20 and reduces to a Destiny of 2 on the Pythagorean chart but sums to 18 and reduces to 9 on the Chaldean chart. Date numbers never change between charts, because they come from the birthdate, not from letters. Neither chart is more correct: they are two different traditional tables, and the calculator shows both so you can compare.

What is a Personal Year number?

Birth month and day plus the current year, reduced to a single digit, said to describe the year theme: 1 for beginnings, 5 for change, 9 for completion, and so on.

Can numerology tell if two people are compatible?

Only as a prompt for conversation about real temperament differences. Any two charts share some numbers and differ on others, so a reading can always find both harmony and tension.

Does changing my name change my numerology chart?

The name-derived numbers, Destiny and Soul Urge, yes; the Life Path, which comes from the birth date, no. Readers disagree about which name should be used.
