Weeks & months between dates: the conversion guide
The weeks-and-months family of questions hides three different questions: how many weeks between two dates, how to convert days to weeks and back, and how many months between two dates — which has two honest answers that differ. I work each of them with real dates and real dollars.
A week calculator sounds like the simplest tool in the box — count the weeks between dates, done — until the first time the answer decides a payroll run or a lease. I wrote this guide because the weeks-and-months family of questions hides three different questions: how many weeks between two dates (an exact count with a leftover), how to convert days to weeks and back (a table, not a guess), and how many months between two dates (which has two honest answers that differ, and you have to pick the right one). I will work each of them with real dates and real dollars, including the payroll trap that costs real money every year: treating 4 weeks as a month.
- Weeks between dates are a whole count plus a leftover: January 1 to March 1, 2026 is 59 days — 8 full weeks with 3 days left over, and the leftover is usually the part that matters.
- Four weeks is not a month, and treating it as one costs real money in payroll and leases — an average month runs 30.44 days, and no real month has exactly that.
- Jumping a whole number of weeks lands you on the same weekday you started, which is why projects, courses and training plans are scheduled in weeks.
How many weeks between two dates?
The method is one line: count the days, divide by 7, keep the remainder. Weeks between dates are never a rounded number you negotiate — they are a whole number of weeks plus a specific number of leftover days, and the leftover is usually the part that matters.
Worked example one. From Thursday, January 1, 2026 to Sunday, March 1, 2026 is 59 days. Divide by 7: 8 full weeks (56 days) with 3 days left over. So the answer to “how many weeks between two dates” here is 8 weeks and 3 days — or 8.43 weeks if a decimal is genuinely what you need, which for planning purposes it rarely is.
Worked example two. From today in my frame — Tuesday, October 20, 2026 — to Monday, January 18, 2027 is 90 days, which is 12 weeks and 6 days. Notice how close that sits to 13 weeks without touching it: anyone who rounded to “about 13 weeks” would plan a full day long. My rule: quote weeks with their remainder (“12 weeks, 6 days”), and only round when the activity itself is fuzzy — never when money or a deadline hangs on it. Our date calculator gives you the day count to divide; the division, thankfully, is the easy part.
Days to weeks (and back): the conversion table
Most conversions people need live on a short list of round spans, so I computed them once, exactly. The average-months column uses the standard average month of 30.44 days (365.25 ÷ 12) — useful for estimates, and labelled as an average every time, because no real month has 30.44 days.
| Days | Weeks and days | Weeks (decimal) | Average months |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 1 week | 1.00 | 0.23 |
| 14 | 2 weeks | 2.00 | 0.46 |
| 21 | 3 weeks | 3.00 | 0.69 |
| 28 | 4 weeks | 4.00 | 0.92 |
| 30 | 4 weeks, 2 days | 4.29 | 0.99 |
| 45 | 6 weeks, 3 days | 6.43 | 1.48 |
| 60 | 8 weeks, 4 days | 8.57 | 1.97 |
| 90 | 12 weeks, 6 days | 12.86 | 2.96 |
| 120 | 17 weeks, 1 day | 17.14 | 3.94 |
| 180 | 25 weeks, 5 days | 25.71 | 5.91 |
| 270 | 38 weeks, 4 days | 38.57 | 8.87 |
| 365 | 52 weeks, 1 day | 52.14 | 11.99 |
| 366 | 52 weeks, 2 days | 52.29 | 12.02 |
Computed exactly: weeks are days ÷ 7 with the remainder shown; average months are days ÷ 30.4375 (the 365.25-day average year ÷ 12), rounded to two decimals.
Converting back is the same table read right-to-left, and it exposes the years: 52 weeks is 364 days, which is not a year. A common year is 52 weeks and 1 day; a leap year is 52 weeks and 2 days. That stray day (or two) is why your birthday lands one weekday later most years and two after a leap February — and why “52-week” plans quietly end a day or two before the anniversary they were aimed at.
Using a week calculator from date: counting forward in weeks
Sometimes the question runs the other way: not “how many weeks between these dates” but “start at this date and jump N weeks” — a week calculator from date question. Projects, courses and training plans are scheduled this way because weeks preserve the weekday: jump a whole number of weeks and you land on the same day of the week you started. A project that kicks off on Monday, January 5, 2026 with a 26-week runway ends its 26th week on Monday, July 6, 2026 — exactly 182 days later, no drift, no calendar friction. That weekday-preserving property is the entire reason week-based planning exists.
Weeks also have official numbers, which matter in much of Europe and in industries that plan by “calendar week”. Under the ISO 8601 system, weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday. Today in my frame — October 20, 2026 — sits in ISO week 43 of 2026, and 2026 is a 53-week ISO year: even December 31, 2026 still belongs to week 53 (and so do December 29, 30 and 31 — January 1, 2027 is in week 53 of 2026 too, which surprises everyone the first time). If a supplier ever quotes you a delivery in “KW 43”, that is the same numbering: week 43, counted the ISO way.
How many months between two dates?
Now the question with two honest answers. Ask how many months between two dates — say Tuesday, March 3, 2026 and Thursday, November 19, 2026 — and I can defend two numbers:
- The calendar answer: 8 full months and 16 days. March 3 plus 8 whole months is November 3; from there to November 19 is 16 more days. This is the answer contracts, tenancy and eligibility rules almost always mean, because it respects the actual calendar.
- The average answer: 8.57 months. The span is 261 days; divide by the average month (30.4375 days) and you get 8.57. This is the answer for estimates, budgets and comparing spans of different shapes — anywhere you need one tidy number and small error is acceptable.
A cleaner case shows when they agree: January 15 to April 15, 2026 is exactly 3 calendar months and exactly 90 days — but note the average answer for those same dates is 2.96, not 3.00. The two methods only coincide by accident. Pick by purpose: if a person or a document will check the date on a calendar, use the calendar answer; if you are feeding a spreadsheet model, the average is fine — as long as it is labelled as one.
One span, all three answers
Let me run a single real span through every method in this guide, so you can see how they sit together. Take Sunday, February 1, 2026 to Monday, August 31, 2026 — a seven-month project window, say. In days, the span is 211. In weeks, 211 ÷ 7 gives 30 full weeks and 1 day. In calendar months, February 1 plus 6 months is August 1, and 30 days remain to August 31: 6 full months and 30 days. In average months, 211 ÷ 30.4375 = 6.93. Four true statements about one span of time, each useful somewhere different: the contract wants the calendar answer, the Gantt chart wants weeks, the budget model wants 6.93, and anyone re-checking my work wants the 211 days underneath them all. When a colleague gives you a span in only one unit and the stakes are real, convert it to days and look at it again — disagreement between methods is where planning errors live.
Four weeks is not a month — and it costs real money
Here is the section I most wish people read before signing things. A month averages 4.35 weeks (52.18 weeks ÷ 12 months), not 4. The 8% gap between those numbers produces real, recurring losses:
Payroll. Take a salary of $62,400 a year. Paid monthly, that is $5,200 a check, 12 checks. Paid every two weeks — the standard “biweekly” schedule — it is $2,400 a check, and there are 26 checks, not 24: 26 × $2,400 = $62,400 exactly. Paid every 4 weeks, there are 13 periods of $4,800. The trap springs when someone budgets a biweekly paycheck as “twice a month”: twice a month × 12 = 24 checks, which under-budgets the year by two whole paychecks — $4,800 on this salary — and double-books the two months that actually contain three paydays. Those “extra” paychecks are not extra; they are the 4.35-week month collecting its due.
Hourly estimates. A worker at $30 an hour, 40 hours a week, earns $62,400 in a full year (52 weeks). Estimate the year as 4 weeks × 12 months and you get $57,600 — a $4,800 shortfall, which is exactly four weeks of pay, vanished by rounding. Multiply that error across a team’s budget and it stops being funny.
Rent. A home at $1,800 a month costs $21,600 a year. Its true weekly equivalent, spread over 52 weeks, is $415.38. A landlord or agent quoting “$450 a week — that’s just a quarter of $1,800” is quoting $23,400 a year: $1,800 more for the identical home, hidden inside the 4-weeks-equals-a-month assumption. Whenever a price is quoted weekly against an alternative quoted monthly, convert both to a year before comparing. The year never lies; the month and the week both shade the truth in opposite directions. The same check protects you in reverse: a service quoted at $200 a week is not “about $800 a month”, it is $866.67 a month on average ($200 × 52 weeks ÷ 12) — $10,400 a year against the $9,600 the naive conversion suggests, a difference of $800 hiding in the same rounding.

How many weeks between two dates?
Count the days between them, divide by 7, and keep the remainder. From January 1 to March 1, 2026 there are 59 days, which is 8 full weeks and 3 days. I always quote the answer that way — weeks plus leftover days — because the leftover is usually the part a plan depends on. Rounding to a bare decimal (8.43 weeks) is fine for estimates but hides exactly the days that matter.
Is 4 weeks exactly one month?
No. Four weeks is 28 days, which is 0.92 of an average month — only February in a common year is exactly 4 weeks long. A month averages 4.35 weeks (52.18 weeks divided by 12). Treating 4 weeks as a month understates a year by about 4 weeks, which is how biweekly pay gets under-budgeted by two paychecks and weekly rent gets overpriced against monthly rent.
How many months between two dates if the days do not line up?
Use full calendar months plus leftover days for anything a person will verify on a calendar: from March 3 to November 19, 2026 is 8 full months (to November 3) plus 16 days. If you need a single decimal for a model, divide the total days by the average month of 30.4375 days: those same dates give 261 days, which is 8.57 average months. Label which method you used — the two answers differ on purpose.
How do I convert days to weeks?
Divide by 7 and keep the remainder as days: 90 days is 12 weeks and 6 days, 180 days is 25 weeks and 5 days, and 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day — which is why a year is never exactly 52 weeks. The conversion table in this guide covers the spans people ask about most, computed exactly.
What date is 26 weeks from a given date?
Add 182 days, and you will land on the same weekday you started — that weekday-preserving property is why week-based plans are so convenient. From Monday, January 5, 2026, 26 weeks lands on Monday, July 6, 2026. Any whole number of weeks works the same way, which makes the week calculator from date approach the fastest way to schedule recurring milestones.
